In 1874 Thomas Francois Burgers, president of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek, commissioned the minting of the first indigenous coins. The coins were struck from alluvial gold from t, the coin moulds were made by Mr LC Wyon while the coins were struck by R Heaton & Sons of Birmingham. After the first batch was struck, the die broke and another die had to be made.
The first batch of coins, known as the
Fine Beard Burgers Ponde, consisted of 695 pieces and the second batch of 142 Coarse Beard Burgers Ponde. Both these coins are extremely rare and highly sought-after.
