ZAR coins, like the unique Single 9 coin, were produced to prove that the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR) was still an independent country capable of producing coinage after the British seized the currency dies in 1899.
The collectable Double 99 Overstamp 1899 Pond coins were struck with a small 1,1mm punch. The double 99’s position below the bust of Paul Kruger varies. The stamping tool also transferred recognisable features that include the squarish 9 shapes and minute rifts at certain points.
