In 1898 Sammy Marks was granted the privilege of using the state mint for a day by President Paul Kruger. Marks, a mining magnate, then used the opportunity to strike 215 gold tickeys (or 3 penny pieces) as keepsakes for his family and friends – including the president and members of the Volksraad.
The
Sammy Marks Tickey has the same design as the silver tickeys of 1892-1897, the Marks Tickey was however struck in 22 carat gold and has the year 1898 on the reverse. The jewellers’ copies of the Sammy Marks Tickey can be identified by the lack of full stops in the ZAR monogram at the top of the reverse.
